Wow, I did not see this one coming. When I popped in Night of the Demons 2, a movie released in 1994, I was expecting to see a really bad, terrible movie. Instead, I got a film that goes out of it’s way to beat the first movie on all accounts. It’s got more nudity, more violence, more demons and a kick ass nun, who puts the God smack on all those nasty demons.
Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as follows: High-schoolers throw a Halloween party in a mansion haunted by a young demon.
Amelia Kinkade returns to play Angela.
Night of the Demons 2 takes place 6 years after Night of the Demons. Angela is still haunting Hull House and students at St. Rita’s Academy, a Catholic boarding school for troubled teenagers, decide to skip out on the Halloween party and go to the house instead. Just when you think the movie is going to just recreate the first one, the kids bail on the party and head back, but not without taking something with them. Angela is along for the ride and hell is about to break loose, very loose. Cue boobies, lesbians, gore, demons, ninja nuns and so much fun, you’ll be pissing holy water for a week.
The movie certainly isn’t lacking some hotties, with Cristi Harris playing Bibi and Christine Taylor playing Terri.
I seriously can’t wrap my brain around how a sequel to Night of the Demons, released in mid 90s, could be so much better than the first one. The acting has improved tenfold, with a few notable faces, such as Christine Taylor (Zoolander, Dodgeball), as Terri and Rick Peters (Dexter), as Rick. The comedy has been ratcheted up by 50 percent, which is yes, cheesy, but oh so much fun. The movie doesn’t for a minute take itself seriously and for that, it comes across as a great horror film. My favorite bits of comedy dealt with the nun, Sister Gloria (played by Jennifer Rhodes), who comes off at first as being the mean old lady, always getting in the way of the teens sexy fun times, but come the end, she is like God’s gift to horror films. (I’m thinking her and the priest from Dead Alive should get together and make a movie about them kicking ass for the Lord.)
The best character in Night of the Demons 2, by far.
The special effects also seem to have been given an upgrade, with a few surprises up it’s sleeve, which impressed me greatly. Also, the nice thing about the movie, is that it still sticks with a great Halloween theme. Although, maybe a few more sexy costumes would’ve been nice. Speaking of sexy, the film makers decided it would be wise to put a bunch of sexual suggestive themes in the movie and I can tell you right now, bravo for them. Seriously, there is so much sexual tension in this movie, it’s about ready to pop it’s top off. The Tatlock approves.
Was there anything I didn’t like? Well for one thing, the movie doesn’t go about explaining how the demons are back at it again, especially Angela. She’s just kinda still there at Hull House and possessing it up. Maybe go about giving me an explanation and I would’ve rated this movie even higher. Another thing, I could’ve done without the cheesy 90’s CGI jump scare ending. Pretty lame. The last thing you want, is a horror fan rolling their eyes come the end.
I have to say, this special effect really surprised me, in a good way.
Night of the Demons 2 does mostly everything right in a horror sequel. It ups the gore, the demon shenanigans, the sex appeal, the comedy and most importantly, the acting. Yeah, it doesn’t bother to explain why the demons are back, which would’ve been nice, but still, the movie guarantees you a 96 min treat, that stays sweet to the end. Angela is back baby. How? I don’t know, but she’s back!
P.S If it was me directing the movie, I would’ve had the nun at the end spout the line “You’ve been God smacked” and then have her pull out an electric guitar and just shred the shit out of it… okay, maybe that’s why I don’t direct movies. However…
You’re welcome Hollywood.
