I’m a sucker for time travel movies. I’ve seen plenty of them (12 Monkeys, Primer, Deja Vu, Timecop, The Jacket, The Butterfly Effect, Back to the Future), just to name a few. Some good ones and some bad ones, but I love them all. Timecrimes (2007) ranks up there as one of the best. Read on for more…
Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as follows: A man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. Finding himself will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences.
Timecrimes is a spanish film with english subtitles. The film mixes a few different genres brilliantly. At first you’ll be watching a suspense thriller, with a bandaged man chasing down our main character of the film, Hector, played by the everyday normal man Karra Elejalde. Next the movie skirts itself into sci-fi territory, before bouncing right back to suspense. This technique makes for an exciting film and one you won’t get bored of. Without getting into deep spoiler territory I do have one complaint on the film. The events of the movie wouldn’t have happened if Hector didn’t meet the bandage man and get forced to travel back in time, but according to the film Hector must travel back in time in order to meet him (roughly what happens, like I said, I don’t want to spoil anything). This creates a big paradox and one that is never explained in the film. Small complaint and one that won’t take away your enjoyment.
There are literally four people in this movie and each one puts in a stellar performance. Karra Elejalde does a great job as Hector, the role requires several different emotions to be put out on screen and he hits everyone with genuine talent. I loved that the role was played by a normal guy and not some muscle bound heartthrob in a tight t-shirt. Nacho Vigalondo (director) is El Joven, the geeky hard working scientist who is the catalyst for the events that will and have occurred. Candela Fernández has a small role as the loving wife Clara. Last but not least is Bárbara Goenaga, who bares it all and shows some lovely nudity.*
|*I’d travel back in time several times to see her again.|
Conclusion time! This is an absolute no brainer for people who love time travel, suspense, a dash of nudity and excellent performances. I completely recommend the movie and you shouldn’t give it a second thought on watching on it.
