Run time: 94 min
Starring: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci
Director: Adam Wingard

You’re Next is interesting, in that it takes conventional horror tropes and spins them on their head. At first, the movie looks as though it’s going to be your typical home invasion film, that we’ve all seen, but before you know it, the movie shifts into a unique and entirely different premise, all thanks to one certain character. This review will be entirely spoiler free, as I feel that going in fresh with this one, is your best option. With that said, let’s get it on…

Short nitty-gritty plot description from IMDb is as follows: When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding
anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one
of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

Nothing hotter than Erin (Sharni Vinson) brandishing a fire axe.

That summary above is pretty much all I’m going to say about the plot. I mean, yeah sure, I’m going to obviously mention how I thought Sharni Vinson’s portrayal of Erin, was to die for and she seriously kicked some major freaking ass. It was a breath of fresh air to finally see a heroine, who isn’t afraid to stand up and keep beating the living shit out of someone, even if you think they might already be dead. Uhhh, so refreshing! None of that, drop the weapon and run bullshit.

Also, I probably will mention how the music in this movie made me grin from ear to ear, with at first it starting off with a little ditty called, Looking for the Magic and then leading in to a quirky type of industrial music, eventually plunging head first, in to an awesome tribute to an 80’s John Carpenter film. It’s was freaking fan-fraking-tastic! Bravo, Mads Heldtberg, Jasper Justice Lee and Kyle McKinnon. Bravo!

Like I said, I don’t want to spoil anything with You’re Next, so I probably should really only mention that the movie is awesomely gory, with plenty of kills, truly inventive kills I might add. This movie doesn’t like to shy away from showing the red gooey stuff. No one seems safe in this one and you’ll be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see who will be next to drop. Plus, the killers in the movie wear those spooky animal masks and you just know that any killer wearing a mask, is never a good thing, unless you’re in a horror movie!

Here’s this Halloween’s trendy costume. You can count on it!

I do think I should mention that some of the acting is a little on the sketchy side, but never anything that is awful. Also, the movie does have a dash of a humor thrown into the bloody mix, so you’ll find yourself chuckling a few times, even when it gets pretty dark and violent. Unfortunately the movie doesn’t eliminate all the horror tropes, as people will still do some of the dumbest shit possible, just so you can get a good scare going. I was willing to forgive most of those dumbass decisions, but I did find myself talking out loud (well, quietly out loud, as it is a movie theater) as to why someone was doing what they were doing. It was just a dumb thing to do.

A special occasion turns deadly for Aimee (Amy Seimetz) and Aubrey (Barbara Crampton).

As you can see, You’re Next is a brilliant horror film and one that surprised me in a lot of ways. I thought for sure it was going to be your typical home invasion movie, one that I’ve seen before (i.e Strangers), but thankfully introducing a kick ass character that flips what we’ve come to expect in a horror movie, was a breath of fresh air and I seriously think your next movie, should be You’re Next.

Useless facts:

– The movie was filmed in 2011 and shown at a few film festivals, but was only recently released.
– Watch out for Ti West, director of the amazing The Innkeepers, as one of the boyfriends.
